| When Soul Rasheed asked his dad for ideas on how to boost his YouTube following, little did he know that it would lead to him starring beside his dad in a family comedy that his dad also co-wrote and directed. Anderson .Paak conceived K-Pops! while locked down in his BTS-crazy household during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the film spurred the making of this tie-in, which is neither a true soundtrack nor a proper Paak album. That said, Paak cant be accused of merely making a handful of perfunctory appearances and signing off on the rest. He co-wrote every track, co-produced almost half of them (with longtime collaborator Dem Jointz as main producer), and sympathetically commingles with a host of K-pop talent (plus past associates Alissia and JID). The albums ebullient tone is set with Paak flanked by Crush on "Flashing Lights," a trap-styled pop celebration that samples Earth, Wind & Fire, who appear in the film. NMIXX and Aespa make like Destinys Child with their respective turns on "Caution" and "Keychain." Some of Paaks most tongue-twisting work can be heard in the latter, just after his rhyming of "Labubu" with "Miu Miu." Paak effectively trades leads with Dean on the lusting and airy "Aftertaste," showcases the Japanese group JO1 as supporting vocalists on the bumping and gnashing "Wanna Buy a Plant + Cost Me," and sometimes leaves the spotlight entirely for the likes of LNGSHOT and Kevin Woo. Theres also a K-Pops! version of G-Dragons Paak-assisted "Too Bad" (very similar to the original found on Ubermensch), and Soul Rasheed makes his recorded debut with the post-disco boogie throwback "Love Is Everywhere." Not to be lost in this enjoyably light entertainment is a stirring and personal finale from Paak that pledges commitment: "My father threw in the towel, too afraid of the heartbreak/But I cant go out that way."
