Chariot Records was a Baltimore label known most for having released a half-dozen 1966-1969 singles by Bob Brady & the Con Chords, a Blue-eyed soul group whose zippy originals "Goodbye Baby" and "Everybodys Goin to the Love-In," along with a similarly energetic cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles "More, More, More of Your Love," were embraced by Englands Northern soul scene. This two-disc Omnivore Recordings anthology, also available digitally, consists of the Con Chords material, a 1971-1972 single and album by a very different band named Coyote, and a few sides by other artists. It also digs up five previously unreleased tracks. Northern soul DJs accurately discerned the Con Chords best moments, all of which put Bradys high tenor, almost a dead ringer for that of Smokey, to affecting use. The 13th track is the fine B-side of major-label A&Ms 1972 licensing of the Miracles cover. Members of the Con Chords became part of the other two bands heard here. Pen Lucy and Coyote were rock outfits with variable helpings of sunshine pop, psychedelia, Southern boogie, and prog in the mix. The freewheeling and rather peculiar Coyote album, co-produced by George Massenburg (before he became known as an engineering wiz, valuable Earth, Wind & Fire associate, and Grammy winner), is all over the place, peaking with "Fly," a dizzying showcase for their group harmonies and instrumental prowess. Those guys would have made sense on concert bills with the likes of Ten Years After, the James Gang, and Little Feat. Also collected here are both sides of singles by Garke Ringlend (thats right), aka Chuck Beaty of Coyote, and Baltimore Bullets power forward Gus Johnson, who delivers a positive spoken message over soulful backing from a band credited as Hope. Adding further interest for lovers of the obscure are two unattributed demos of songs written by Sam Egorin and Stuart Levy (the duo who wrote Pen Lucys "Breakfast"), and a version of Stevie Wonders "Living for the City" by (otherwise unheard?) shouter James Gant. [Omnivore also reissued the Con Chords tracks and the Coyote album with separate vinyl and digital editions.] ~ Andy Kellman
