| On Redstar Wu & the Worldwide Scourge, Genesis Owusu eschews the ambiguity of his previous albums and says his piece. Its a notable shift from the Australians abstract sophomore set, Struggler, which filtered its social commentary through the lens of a cockroach. While he may have ditched existentialism in order to meet the urgency of the moment, his artistic hustle is stronger than ever. Redstar Wu is unflinchingly political, cataloging and confronting a litany of modern-day ills from the normalization of corporate greed and corruption to political extremism, racism, and the relentless hypocrisy of the elite. Owusus tongue has never sounded so sharp, and yet the album is not without its moments of tenderness. Its also musically dexterous, segueing between crackling post-punk energy, funk, electro, R&B, and indie rock, all threaded together by his vigorous alt-rap delivery. Opener "Pirate Radio" sets the tone of the front half as its emcee slings barbed takedowns at the rich and powerful ("Elons a fucking weirdo, who gave these incels moolah?"). On another of its lead singles, "Death Cult Zombie," Owusu neuters the MAGA and manosphere movements with a single swipe ("I tiki torch a Klansman while I stare down a witness, Andrew Tate pod while you working your fitness, still cant figure out why you cant get any women"), an indication that the rest of the world is just as fed up with its posturing. Mirroring the sentiment of his previous album, "Life Keeps Going" cruises forward with unstoppable resiliency and sets up Redstar Wus surprising late game transformation. Tempos begin to fluctuate, more voices enter the picture, and melody comes to the fore; its the sound of collaboration and joining together in cautious optimism. Over the slow guitar groove of "Situation," Owusu downshifts, singing "they up in the yacht but we in the same boat, so we may as well make sure all of us float, can’t stop us all with that one little moat, castle’s gotta give, gotta give to the folks." The set culminates with the weary warmth of "ONE4ALL," a dreamy end credits track whose refrain of "I got you, friend" is miles away from the albums starting point. Over three distinctive releases, Owusu has proven he can play in almost any arena, and Redstar Wu is his finest hour yet. ~ Timothy Monger |
