| Steve Lacy was highly accomplished by the time he issued Gemini Rights, but his second album vaulted him to another plane. The set entered the Billboard 200 in the Top Ten, and within a few months, Lacy was selling out theaters as "Bad Habit," its second single, rode atop the Hot 100, on its way to global-smash status and an eventual Grammy for the parent release. Lacy understandably retreated from the spotlight and took his time in making this follow-up. While the circumstances and the passing of four years would support the notion that Oh Yeah? must naturally be Lacys "most personal" or "most mature" album thus far, it doesnt really fit any single designation other than the third album by a certain charming, slightly eccentric, and alternately profound and crude artist still in his twenties. Nor is this really a post-fame album. Lacy stated that one key change in the making of Oh Yeah? was that he deliberated over lyrics for the first time, yet he still shows a knack for dashing off puerile bons mots after his most heartfelt lines, as in the drifting "Show You Me," a primarily acoustic ballad where he gets metaphorical about the tears he shed before he found the one, then remarks, "Hard to smile cause I had the coochie stuck in my teeth." Lacy seems revel in contrasts, like when he packs "Doom," one of his tightest alt-pop tunes, with some of his messiest lyrics, accepting his antagonist role before signing off with a taunting "Blah, blah, blah, shut the fuck up," as if hes serenading his phone as it plays a recording of an exs FaceTime breakup call. Never one to do it on his own, Lacy works with some of his past collaborators, including Internet bandmate Matt Martians, Foushee, and Matthew Castellanos, as well as a host of contemporaries and inspirations. On the slow-knocking "Is It Cool," the first verse of which is an astounding composite of grief and humor, Lacy plays against gender stereotypes with SZA ("Can we get naked instead of talking, babe?"). Erykah Badu joins for "Pure Colour," a bleary collision between early Funkadelic and late Portishead, while Cecile Believe duets on "LoveSexDrugBomb," an unresolved (and unfiltered) love ballad arranged by Tyler, The Creator. All the seemingly stray ideas, from the Rentals-like synth pop in the title song to the rave-style James Brown/Lyn Collins break in "Nice Shoes," fall not so neatly, if favorably, into place. ~ Andy Kellman |
