| レコーディングにあたり、バンドは2人の素晴らしいプロデューサーを迎えた。アプローチこそ全く異なるものの、サウンド面でウィーザーのビジョンと見事に共鳴していたクラス・アールンドと、ケネス・ブルーム(旧名:ケニー・ビーツ)だ。ケニーは"史上最も凶暴なウィーザーのアルバムを作りたい"と意気込んでいたそうだ。クラスが緻密で計算された厳密なレコーディング手法をとった一方で、ケニーは「部屋で鳴らすロックバンド」のフィーリングを引き出すプロダクションを追求。グリッドも、クリック音も、ピッチ補正も一切なしという徹底ぶりだった。ドラムのレコーディングは、4人全員が互いの音を聴き合い、その場で曲のアレンジを微調整しながらの"ライブ録音"で行われたという。その結果の『WEEZER』は、ウィーザーの普遍的な強みを最大限に発揮しており、すべて新曲なのにまるで「架空のベストアルバム」を聴いているかのような感覚にさせてくれる。これほどまでにダイレクトで生々しいバンドの姿を捉えた作品は、結成から30年経った彼らのこれまでのディスコグラフィーのどの作品にも引けを取らないほどの勢いと生命力に満ちていると言えるだろう。 アルバムに先駆けてリリースされたリード・シングル「We Might As Well Be Strangers feat. | The early stages of Weezers Gold album took place in a rehearsal space, the four members of the band getting together to hash out songs face-to-face in a way they never had before. When they got to the studio, this no-nonsense approach was fostered by producer Kenny Beats desire to make the most violent-sounding album in the bands discography. Its definitely the Weezer album with the gnarliest guitar sounds, the least amount of polish, and the most thunderous rhythm section. Theyve dropped all the experimentation, stripped off the gloss, and for the most part stuck to the sonic basics. Even if the songs were weak, the massive sound of the record would still make it worth a listen or two. Fortunately, the songs are some of the strongest Rivers Cuomo and the band have delivered in years. Equal parts nostalgic and focused on the issues of the day, the lyrics show the usual mixture of silliness and profundity with references to Snoop Dogg, QR codes, the early days of the band, parental wisdom, and what it takes to get through a day. The best tracks toss it all in a pot, mix it with giant hooks, and deliver it with blown-out precision. "Shine Again" has guitars that sound like they were scraped up off the studio floor, a pounding beat that is gloriously relentless, and a chorus that explodes through the speakers like the morning sun cutting through the curtains. Its oddly uplifting, Cuomos voice and the guitars coming together like a bear hug. "Hoops" also has some truly nasty guitar riffs, but instead of being emotionally powerful, this song is a comparative lark that puts Cuomo firmly in the Luddite camp when facing toasters that need an app installed to crisp up the bread. Elsewhere, there are songs that look back at the bands beginnings ("The LA Sound"), reinvent punk-pop (Dont Make It Weird"), lament the march of progress over sanity in heavy metal waltz time ("Nowhere"), and simultaneously celebrate and make fun of their classic alt-rock sound ("C.E.O."). Most impressively, they break hearts like theyre glass on the catchy-as-hell duet with Wednesdays Karly Hartzman, "We Might as Well Be Strangers," a song that weaves together jangling verses, a huge rocked-out chorus, and lyrics that hit home for anyone who ever had a relationship turn sour. (So, everyone.) Weezer slips one of these songs in every now and then amid the goofy rockers and wall-rattling anthems, and its one of the things that make them such a great band. So does their willingness to try new things, even if that new thing is reimagining the groups early sound, then supercharging it. The Gold album is a blast from the past that could work as a reset and propel the band to make more records as stripped-down, brutal, and real as this. Even if it doesnt, at least they gave their fans another album that, like their first two, captures the bands rock & roll heart at its best. ~ Tim Sendra |
