| Innovative guitar duo Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero began working together in Mexico City in the 1990s, first in the heavy metal band Tierra Acida, then as a beach bar-playing duo in Ixtapa, then as a busking duo in Dublin, Ireland, Western Europe, Australia, and Japan. They are citizens of the world. OurHome was recorded and produced by the duo in Japan at Tokyos NK Studio with mixing assistance from Dave Sardy. The country, its culture, and its people are beloved by the duo. The album marks RyGs return to a primarily acoustic sound, though electric guitars appear. The 11-track set also includes their first-ever vocal song and guest instrumentalists including jazz pianist Hiromi, guitarists Yukihiro Atsumi and Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth), and cellist Hiyori Okuda. The title-cut opener was written in tribute to Pelusa, the duos deceased cat. Following a short, mournful, balladic intro by Sanchez, Quintero adds a syncopated percussive bottom. The melody in the turnaround refrain recalls Bob Dylans "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" while the songs textural reach, expanded by cello, is almost lush. "Somos Como Tu" (We Are Like You) includes vocals by RyG. Written by Sanchez in 2015, they tried recording it several times but it never felt right. The lyrics are about humanitys relentless, lonely, individual and collective searches for places of safety and nurture. While Sanchezs voice delivers the gorgeous melody, Quintero adds harmony then a rapid, fiery rapped delivery that increases in intensity until the players are both chanting. Quinteros polyrhythmic pulse uses the guitar body as a drum. Jazz pianist Hiromi guests on the glorious "Akatsuki," titled after a secret organization of mercenary ninjas in the manga Naruto. Hiromis deft, percussive, arpeggiatic playing style wonderfully complements Quinteros driving strum and Sanchezs ghostly electric slide work as Okuda adds a lush, serpentine backdrop. "Monster" is titled after Naoki Urasawas deeply psychological manga thriller. Introduced by soft cello and fingerpicked guitar, Quinteros strumming increases the intensity until Sanchez starts playing a melodic vamp before switching to electric guitar and adding metal ferocity to the ferocious cello sonorities and manic strum. Other highlights include the unrelentingly heavy "Flying Underground," while "Quicksand" moves between contemplative and explosive passages. "Is in Your Pocket" features nylon-string guitarist Yukihiro Atsumi, whose aesthetic derives from Japans Edo period before guitar music existed. The interplay between the guitarists is intricate and dreamy before electric slide guitar and wafting cello signal a sea change in dynamic, tempo, and harmony. "Simurgh," the 11-minute closer, features Friedman as a guest. The track is suite-like; its segments change shape and density in constant yet seamless motion through calming classical phases, jazzed-up syncopated arpeggios, tempered cello interludes, and layered percussion. OurHome is relentlessly forward in intention. Rodrigo y Gabriela deliver remarkable growth as composers, improvisers, arrangers, and producers. | グラミー賞受賞ギター・デュオ=ロドリーゴ・イ・ガブリエーラ 東京でレコーディングされた通算7枚目となるアルバム『OurHome』 グラミー賞を受賞したギター・デュオ"Rodrigo y Gabriela(ロドリーゴ・イ・ガブリエーラ)"は、メキシコ出身、ダブリンを拠点に活動。ロドリーゴ・サンチェス(Rodrigo Sanchez)とガブリエーラ・クインテーロ(Gabriela Quintero)の男女2人によるアコースティック・ロック・ギター・デュオ。地元メキシコでスラッシュ・メタル・バンドからスタートするも、新しいスタイルの音楽を目指し2人でアイルランドに渡る。ストリートで腕を磨いていく中でそのプレイ・スタイルが評判を呼び、活動の場を徐々にヨーロッパ各地にも広げ、2006年のワールド・デビュー・アルバム『rodrigo y gabriela』、2009年の2ndアルバム『11:11』が世界中でヒットとなる。2019年発表の4thアルバム『Mettavolution』はグラミー賞"最優秀コンテンポラリー・インストゥルメンタル・アルバム"部門を受賞。 本作、通算7枚目となるアルバム『OurHome』は、東京のNK Soundでレコーディングされ、メンバー自身がプロデュースを担当。結成から20年以上にわたり独自のインストゥルメンタル・ギターサウンドで世界的評価を築いてきた彼らにとって、新たなチャプターを示す作品となっている。本作には元メガデスのギタリスト、マーティ・フリードマンをはじめ、日本が誇るジャズ・ピアニスト上原ひろみ、チェリスト奥田日和、ギタリスト/作曲家の渥美幸裕らが参加。 先行シングル「Monster」では、漫画界の巨匠、浦沢直樹氏による同名作品『MONSTER』からインスピレーションを受けた楽曲で、人間の心理に潜む矛盾や暗部を描いた、アルバムの中でも特にシネマティックでダークな楽曲となっている。また同曲のシングル用ジャケット写真、ミュージック・ビデオを浦沢直樹氏が手掛けており、ここに奇跡のコラボレーションが実現した。 収録曲「暁(Akatsuki)」では、ピアニスト上原ひろみをゲストに迎え、日本の人気漫画/アニメ『NARUTO -ナルト-』に登場する忍集団"暁"にちなんで名付けられ、長年アニメを愛してきた彼らが受けてきた日本文化からの影響を色濃く反映した作品となっている。広がりのあるサウンドと荘厳で神秘的な雰囲気をまとったインストゥルメンタル曲であり、『NARUTO』の根底に流れる仏教的宇宙観や輪廻転生といったテーマから着想を得ている。同曲では、ロドリーゴ・サンチェスとガブリエーラ・クインテーロによる陰影に富んだギター・フレーズと激しいリズムの応酬に、上原ひろみの自在で躍動感あふれるピアノが融合。メロディ、リズム、パーカッションの境界を超えた3人の卓越した演奏が響き合う作品に仕上がっている。 今後のロドリーゴ・イ・ガブリエーラの動きから目を離せない。 |
