商品の紹介
| The Hard Truth marks Wynonnas return from a ten-year recording hiatus. In the interim, her mother and longtime musical partner Naomi Judd, took her own life in 2022. In 2024, Wynonna assumed full custody of her granddaughter while her daughter is incarcerated. Wynonna also began writing songs with Moser and others. She also left Curb Records to sign with Los Angeles indie Anti-, a home to musical outsiders and survivors. Her debut, The Hard Truth, contains 11 songs --10 of which she composed-- in an unflinching, musically raw account of her autobiography, struggles, and secrets. She enlisted the War & Treaty, Patterson Hood, and Sam Beam (aka Iron & Wine) as guests. Opener "All Downhill from Ashland" delivers bluesy roots and folk instrumentation atop an arresting lyric addressing her mother: Hey, hey Mama can you hear me now/I’m far from heaven but I’m screaming loud/You held the curse from your mamas hands For me to wear around me like a family brand ...Where you couldn’t love you so how could you love me .... over the War & Treatys backing vocals, a lonesome fiddle, kick drums, and acoustic guitars. She and Moser co-wrote "Everything" a shuffling soul-drenched country rocker, with Hood: Everything is not okay/But I’m okay with everything ... it goes on to detail the public perception of her autobiography and the struggle that contradicts it. "Broken and Blessed" marries Americana, country gospel, and folk in a swirl of rootsy melody and revealing lyrics that center on her grief, while existing between "survival and revival." Beam cowrote and appears on "Hear Me Now." It name checks Joni Mitchell, and indeed evokes her early-70s work (albeit with a whining pedal steel present) as she sings to her late mother: Would you roll your eyes/Would you be surprised/If you could hear me now?" Would you harmonize/If you could hear me now?" The War & Treaty join Wynonna on Appalachian folk song "The Hopeful Lie," an empathetic, tough love number that acknowledges the limits of familial love in inspiring personal change. "Kentucky Queen" is an anthem where Wynonna claims her proper place in the pantheon of Applachian music. Meanwhile, the standout track "Girl Who Could Sing," is written about the father she never knew while exploring questions that can never be answered: Did my voice and my backbone both come from you? Closer "Love Aint Got the Best of Me," is driven by a soul shuffle, horn section, and gospel piano, Wynonna reveals her core: Love has chewed me up/Love has spit me out/It saved my life... Ultimately, The Hard Truth is an Americana masterpiece; it offers unwavering vision and courage in a seamless mix of restless country soul, blues, folk, and roots rock. ~ Thom Jurek |
