| When they reconvened in 2025, Jorja Smith and Falling or Flying collaborator P2J had their sights set on making a dancefloor-oriented EP. The two quickly put together an EPs worth of material, and the surplus of ideas P2J had at the ready inspired Smith to keep cooking until she had her third album. What Are the Odds stimulates movement from top to bottom with a mix of 2-step garage, U.K. funky, and Afro house rhythms that is refined and consistent to the point of near homogeneity. Its a seemingly private affair geared more for a long-needed lonesome bedroom sulk than communal dancefloor release. Reprieves from doubts, rebukes, and assertions are few and far between. Some of them are freighted with a snakebitten sense that it could all go wrong at any moment, and when Smith sings "You make me feel so alive" to duet partner Wizkid, she sounds relieved more than anything else. For all the wistfulness regarding sour romance, the feeling is sensed strongest in the nakedly honest opening lines of "This City": "I reveal it in my words, I lost the passion/Simply, it was best when I had nothin." For an artist with something like 20 BPI-certified singles and two Top Five U.K. albums, thats as bravely sung as any of the confrontational lines. ~ Andy Kellman |
