| Following the release of her fifth studio album, Italian Ice, which featured members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Dap-Kings, among others, Nicole Atkins put out a live-tracked acoustic version of the album called Memphis Ice, then unintentionally entered into her longest gap between albums yet. Admitting that she struggled with some self-doubt as time went on, she eventually called on Wilcos Pat Sansone to help her resurrect the lush, retro-minded Baroque pop that shed become best known for. Arriving six years after Italian Ice, Drama does exactly that. John Paul Keith (guitar) and Danny Banks (drums) from her touring band, along with guests like Dr. Dogs Eric Slick (drums) and the Texas Gentlemens Dan Creamer (piano, organ), first laid down live rhythm tracks, then Atkins and Sansone headed to his home studio to work on overdubs. The singer/songwriter appropriately opens the resulting set list with a dramatic selection, "Trippin’ on Teardrops," a late-50s-/early-60s-imbued orchestral ballad featuring a Nashville choir. The song begins in 6/8 time, vintage prom-style, before transitioning to 4/4 for its tympani- and tubular bells-punctuated choruses and subsequent verses. She quickly changes things up with some 80s-inspired canned drums and vibrating synth bass on the lonely "Singing in the Mirror," a clearly personal, motivational song about picking yourself up as needed. Another 80s-evoking track is the sophisti-pop-shaded "Like Its the First Time," a brighter, uptempo entry thats full of hope concerning a relationship. Atkins returns to the midcentury for songs including the poignant "Cue the Symphony," a theatrical, more compositionally complex duet with none other than Chris Isaak. The records other duet is the smoky slow jam "Curtain Call," featuring Davey Horne, who also plays guitar and Wurlitzer on the album. All 12 songs on Drama are similarly noteworthy for one reason or another, making it well worth the wait or not worth the worry, depending on your role in its release. ~ Marcy Donelson |
