商品の紹介
| Naming an album Archives is almost too on-the-nose for a band as enamored with arcane instrumentation and conceptual songwriting as Vanishing Twin. While their fifth full-length does feel like its part of a treasured collection, the way they rifle through images, sounds, and stories and blur together past and future, folk and electronic is too immediate and vital to be preserved under glass. As Cathy Lucas, Valentina Magaletti, and Susumu Mukai pivot from the dense, inward-looking psychedelia of Afternoon X, the space they leave for experimentation and collaboration is just as much of a testament to their power to transport listeners. As always, Vanishing Twins talent for haunting, almost subliminal sound design is second to none. Suspended by weightless vocal harmonies and chromatic percussion, "Hazama"s billowing trip-hop could be a field recording from the moon. And by the time the title track pairs spiraling strings with a spoken-word journey into a forgotten history, it seems perfectly natural to be hearing about the lives of a race of frog women. It wouldnt be a Vanishing Twin album without some musical wandering, yet Archives is one of their most song-oriented works. "Sugar Stone" is a remarkably direct and engaging reflection on the continually shifting experience of motherhood ("Now your eyes are changing/From blue to hazel"). Steadily climbing on Lucas circling vocals, "Wherever You Are" is another standout thats expansive but not excessive. Though tracks like the pastoral collage "So Calm (Case Study House No. 8)" cant help but reinforce comparisons to latter-day Broadcast, on Archives Vanishing Twin explore a slightly different strain of hauntology with striking results. Driven by heavy breathing and teeth-rattling beats, "Bring Me the Axe" revives the blood and guts of the earliest fairy tales, sharpening from a lulling trance into a hunt that culminates with Lucas unnervingly calm mantra: "Who could believe that a girl could do that?" At the very end of the album, the trio loosely links Archives discrete worlds. Vanishing Twin save one of their finest songs for last with "Oral Tradition," where the refrain "Oral tradition/A new intuition" functions as a mission statement for band and album alike. Transforming complex ideas into subtle, beguiling pop has always been one of Vanishing Twins greatest strengths, and on Archives, they do it brilliantly. ~ Heather Phares |
