| Brahmss Piano Concerto No. 1 draws much of its power from the tensions between the soloist and the particularly dense orchestral writing. Francesco Piemontesi, Manfred Honeck, and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig offer an interpretation that smooths over these tensions a little too much, despite the performers undeniable technical command. From the opening of the Maestoso, Honeck favors fluid lines and a blended orchestral sound. The accents lack bite, the dynamic contrasts are insufficiently pronounced, and the sense of agitation that should run through this lengthy movement struggles to take hold. The pianos entrance only partially reverses this tendency. Piemontesi has the necessary power and shapes his phrases with considerable care and attention, but his playing remains too cautious to do full justice to the scores dramatic conflicts. The precision of the performance does little to compensate for the lack of genuine dramatic development, and certain passages feel unnecessarily drawn out. The Adagio is more convincing. Piemontesi cultivates delicate sonorities, while the woodwinds and strings occasionally achieve a welcome tenderness. Nevertheless, the performers restraint tends to make the musical discourse overly uniform. Expressive inflections remain understated, and the more intense episodes do little to alter the prevailing atmosphere. In the final Rondo, the articulation becomes livelier, particularly in the contrapuntal exchanges, but the momentum remains uneven. The conclusion carries greater weight without quite achieving the expected sense of exhilaration. The Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, further expose the limitations of this approach. Piemontesi pays careful attention to voice leading and tonal refinement, particularly in the Intermezzo in A major. Yet his phrasing retains a certain unevenness that undermines the hesitations and contrasts characteristic of these late works. The Ballade in G minor suffers from an overly sustained legato, while the final Intermezzo in E flat minor lacks genuine expressive depth. Throughout, the playing feels more controlled than emotionally engaged. The recorded sound compounds several of these shortcomings. The piano is captured with considerable presence, dominating the orchestral texture and obscuring some of its finer details. The recording remains clear, but the balance between soloist and orchestra does not always serve the complexity of Brahmss writing. Despite a handful of successful passages, this release ultimately disappoints more than it convinces, failing to capture the full dramatic intensity and expressive richness of Brahmss music. ~ Islem Meghiref |
