| Mount Kimbies studio albums have gone in numerous directions, from post-dubstep to post-punk, with double solo album MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning split between left-field R&B/hip-hop and Actress-like abstract techno. Their DJ mixes have tended to dwell in the more experimental side of club music, with 2018s DJ-Kicks delving into minimal techno, acid, and avant-garde synth pop, including two songs by Severed Heads dating from the early 80s. This makes it all the more surprising that the duos installment of the Fabric Presents series is a relatively straightforward mix reflecting the type of material theyve actually been playing in clubs. The tracks file in with steady, four-to-the-floor rhythms and classic house pianos and organs, often having a warm, summery feel. The duos "Monroe" is essentially a revisit of their earlier single "Marilyn," with Mica Levis vocals shrouded in dub effects and submerged under waves of bubbly synths. Sweater on Polos tightly wound, flange-heavy "Machine Talk" gets a little closer to the experimentation of other Mount Kimbie mixes, but its employed as a segue, dropping us into the vibrating U.K. garage bass of tracks by Mella Dee and G Flame. The pair delve into the 90s and 2000s with techno gems from DJ Shufflemaster, Acronym City, Frequency (Orlando Voorn), and Robert Hood, while ramping up the energy with newer inclusions from Malin Genie, Regal86, and Mount Kimbie themselves. After heading through peak time with cuts from the likes of Morgan Louis and Paul Jacobs, the mix does cool off a bit as it enters the home stretch, though it ends on a more fired-up note, layering King Krules vocals from older Mount Kimbie track "You Took Your Time" on top of Dylan Fogartys boisterous "Metallic." Fabric Presents Mount Kimbie is an expertly sequenced mix that never loses momentum for its duration, and shows that the duo can excel at doing a proper, uplifting club set. ~ Paul Simpson |
