| William Basinskis 2026 work Passing the Cup of Sorrows was inspired by a spiritual hypnotherapy exercise involving an exchange of energy between two souls in the spirit world, in which one spirit comes to understand and forgive someone who hurt them in a past life. Moved by online testimonials of this practice, Basinski attempted to interpret this transformation process through music. The 38-minute piece consists of intimately recorded solo piano, with background noises audible at certain points, along with sparse electronic effects. Basinski typically plays a short melodic pattern and lets the notes decay, patiently waiting before playing again. Notes that have already been played sporadically flash back during the in-between spaces and still periods, subtly creating feelings of displacement. About halfway through, Basinski begins to apply layers of reverb, making everything start to feel distant, and this is where it truly seems like a transferring of spiritual energy is taking place. Still, there are occasional piano notes that seem clearer, as if certain memories continue to stick out while others are being washed away. By the end, the piano notes float away, resembling a final departure from one realm to another. Inevitably, the pieces slow, gradual decay recalls Basinskis own The Disintegration Loops series, though its asymmetrical sequences are inspired by Morton Feldman, and its textural dissolve brings to mind Alvin Lucier. Basinski has often created music about the ending of the cycle of life, but Passing the Cup of Sorrows seems to elevate in a different way than some of his other works. ~ Paul Simpson |
