「A Love Supreme, Pt. II」、「Central Park West」、「My Favorite Things」、「Naima」、「Giant Steps」といった楽曲は、親しみやすさと新たな解釈のバランスが取れており、特に「Giant Steps」は瞑想的なバラードへと生まれ変わっている。 |

| Musical polymath Miguel Atwood-Fergusons credits number more than 350 recordings. Whether playing several instruments, composing, arranging, or producing, his work has accompanied Bilal, Shafiq Husayn, Marisa Monte, Ceu, Kandace Springs, and Anderson .Paak to name scant few. In 2010, he conducted and arranged an orchestra playing the music of J Dilla on Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes. In 2023, his Les Jardins Mystiques Vol?.?1 showcased 52 original compositions on three discs, over three-and-a-half hours. ANANTA: Spirit of Coltrane appears on Impulse! during John Coltranes centenary celebration. Atwood-Ferguson, who claims the saxophonist as a lifelong influence, served as composer, arranger, violinist, and violist. He plays violin, viola, and cello throughout, and enlisted a 21-piece ensemble with soloists in creating genre-blurring textures that interpret Coltranes "cosmic music" via vanguard and straight-ahead jazz, classical, and electronic music. Not a pastiche, this set was carefully conceived, architected, and arranged to include seven Coltrane compositions, and "a force," an original with a poem written and read by aja monet. The opening version of "Naima" showcases harpist Brandee Younger and vibist Joel Ross as soloists. Atwood-Ferguson creates a host of "floating" strings as piano and upright bass frame resonant harp and illuminating vibes to carry both melody and solos. "Compassion" is based on the posthumous version that appeared on First Meditations (For Quartet). Its modal pattern, offered by pianist David Virelles, is supported by bassist Karl McComas-Reichl and drummer Marcus Gilmore. The soloists are saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and bass clarinetist Morgan Guerin. Flying Lotus haunting electronics color the backdrop, adding depth and tension to Wilkins solo and Gilmores rolling kit. The notoriously difficult "Giant Steps" offers a reimagination of it as a ballad. Shabaka Hutchings plays flute, clarinet, and saxophone with assistance from Ross vibes and Gilmores drums. Strings are lush, expressionistic, and colorful, and Ross solo is poignant and beautiful. "My Favorite Things" features pianist Javier Santiago and saxophonist Azar Lawrence -- the latter played on three seminal McCoy Tyner albums in the 1970s-- Enlightenment (1973), Sama Layuca (1974), and Atlantis (1975) -- its faithfully and passionately rendered. Ballad "After the Rain" originally appeared on 1963s Impressions. Guitarist Jeff Parker and well-traveled flautist Elaine Pinderhughes entwine on the melody; it remains close to the original, though its lush orchestral backdrop of harp and strings offers a nearly cinematic quality. A faithful "A Love Supreme, Pt. 2 - Resolution" is deftly and forcefully rendered by a quartet with saxophonist Devin Daniels, pianist Santiago, bassist McComas-Reichl, and drummer Justin Brown. Closer "Central Park West" is introduced by Virelles poetic piano before Wilkins lilting saxophone and Guerins EWI enter with Youngers breezy harp. Gilmores drums are painterly. The tracks high point is the gorgeous, deeply melodic double bass solo by Ryoma Takenaga. ANANTA: Spirit of Coltrane is exactly what a tribute should be: It offers expansive interpretations of classic work for a new age and audience. ~ Thom Jurek |
